Biography
A silvery - voiced” singer (Opera Magazine), Soprano Sungji Kim has brought the various acclaim from critics with her exquisite artistry and attractive stage presence with "her incisive and bright voice" (The New York Times). With numerous performances in Europe, Asia, Russia, Canada and throughout the United States, Ms. Kim is a much sought after artist with a repertoire ranging from Renaissance and Early Music, to contemporary pieces written exclusively for her voice.
Ms. Kim has performed more than 30 operatic roles in the United States and abroad. Her operatic repertoire encompasses the roles of Rosina in Il Barbiere di Sivilglia with Boheme Opera New Jersey, Le feu in L’enfant et les sortilèges under Maestro Lorin Maazel at the Castleton Festival, Norina in Don Pasquale and Musetta in La bohème with Boheme Opera New Jersey, Nannetta in Falstaff with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theater Rutgers, Adina in L'elisir d’Amore at Curtis Opera Center, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte at Opera Theater Rutgers and Seoul Arts Center, Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore and Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, Clorinda in La Cenerentola at the Merola Young Artist Program of the San Francisco Opera, Olympia in Les contes d’Hoffmann and Medee in Medee at the Vertical Player Repertory, Gilda in Rigoletto at Amato Opera, Gretel in Hansel und Gretel, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia, Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne and Monica in The Medium at Curtis Opera Center, Alcina in Alcina and Creuse in Medee at the Vertical Player Repertory, Lakmé in Lakmé at the Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater, Zerlina in Fra Diavolo at the ConcertOpera Philadelphia, Flora in Flora and Cendrillon in Cendrillon at Opera Theater Rutgers, Aricie in Hippolyte et Aricie and Galatea in Acis and Galatea in NY.
Equally at home on the concert and recital stage, Ms. Kim has performed the impressive array including Peace Concert at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Liederkranz Winner Concert at Carnegie Hall, Mozart’s Mass c minor with the Monmouth Civic Choir, Bach’s Magnificat and Handel’s Alexander’s Feast at the Pacific Music Festival, Haydn’s The Creation and Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, Mozart’s Exultate, jubilate and Mahler’s Symphony 4 with Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with Boheme Opera New Jersey and the venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, Caramoor Music Festival, San Carlo Dei Lombardi in Italy, Chiesa di San Francesco in the Republic of San Marino and the Church of Christ in Russia.
Ms.Kim has appeared in interviews and live on-air performances on WWFM, Jersey Arts and SBS broadcast in South Korea. Further accomplishments include various awards from prestigious competitions such as the Liederkranz Foundation Competition, Sembrich Voice Scholarship Competition sponsored by the Kosciuszko Foundation, Merola Young Artist Program, Annapolis Opera Company Vocal Competition, James Parkinson Opera Foundation Competition, Paul Robeson Vocal Competition, Anna Moffo Memorial Soprano Competition and Goethe Institute German Lieder Competition.
A native of Busan, South Korea, Soprano Sungji Kim earned her Doctoral Degree of Musical Arts at Rutgers University, Professional Studies Diploma at the Manhattan School of Music as the recipient of the President’s Scholarship, Master’s Degree at the Curtis Institute of Music and Bachelor’s Degree cum laude at Seoul National University as the recipient of the Merit scholarship.
