Biography.
Korean-American violinist Kara Nam began her musical studies at age 3 on piano and continued with violin at the age of 9. She had her first piano recital at the age of 7 and debuted as a violinist with the Seoul Philharmonic at age 11. Since then, Kara has garnered many awards and accolades in her musical career throughout South Korea, Europe and the US. Such accomplishments include winning first prize at numerous solo and chamber music competitions including the Young Artists Auditions, The Grand Summer Music Academy Competition, the Korean Newspaper Competition, SYC competition, etc.
Her solo concerts include appearances with such orchestras as the Korean Symphony, the Seoul Philharmonic, the Su-won Philharmonic, the Busan Philharmonic, the Korea Coop Orchestra, the Seoul Symphony, the Janacek Philharmonic, the Czech National Symphony, the Aspen Music Festival Conducting Academy Orchestra, the Florence Symphony, as well as many others. Kara has performed in such venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, Steinway Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Sejong Cultural Hall, Kumho Arts Hall and 92nd Y Hall as well as many others in Europe.
Kara was featured in such magazines as Marie Claire, World Music, Strad, among many others, and has published her own etude 'Quick Warm Up Book; Violin Techniques for the Left Hand' in 2013.
Her musical education began at the Juilliard School's pre-college division with Won-Bin Yim and Dorothy Delay at the age of 13. After seeking a Bachelor of Music degree with Joel Smirnoff at the Juilliard School, she continued pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School where she studied with David Chan, both as a full scholarship recipient. She Completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music under a full scholarship while serving as teaching assistant to Won-Bin Yim. She has studied her solo and chamber music with Masao Kawasaki, Peter Oundjian, Cho-Liang Lin, Juilliard String Quartet, Fred Sherry, Joel Sachs, Roman Totenberg, Abram Shtern, and Ilan Gronich and has been a full scholarship recipient from the Aspen Music Festival for many years as a teenager.
She is currently teaching at Seokyung University, Seoul Arts High School, Yewon School, Sunhwa Arts School, Kyewon Arts School, and Kyunggi Arts High School. She also held masterclasses at Seattle University, The University of North Carolina and North Eastern University.
