Biography
Dr. Tigran Shiganyan has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a conductor, violinist,
educator, and producer. He appeared as a soloist and conductor in America, Europe,
and Asia. Dr. Shiganyan is a prize winner of the American Prize ERNST BACON MEMORIAL AWARD
for the Performance of American Music in Orchestral Category in 2021 and
prizewinner of numerous other international violin and conducting
competitions, including William C. Byrd Young Artists International Competition in Flint /
USA, Pittsburgh Symphony Concerto Competition in Pittsburgh / USA, Five Towns
Music Art Foundation Competition in New York / USA, International Competition Palma
D’Oro in Finali-Liguria / Italy, International Violin Competition in Almaty / Kazakhstan,
and winner of IMKA International Conducting Competition in Sarajevo / Bosnia and
Herzegovina.
Dr. Shiganyan was born into a family of musicians; his mother is the world-renowned
composer Dilorom Saidaminova. He graduated from Uspensky Music School for Gifted
Children and Tashkent State Conservatory in Tashkent / Uzbekistan, where he earned
his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, as well as graduate and post-
graduate diplomas, all with highest distinction. In the United States, he earned Master of
Music degree and Artist Diploma from Duquesne University in Pittsburg / Pennsylvania.
Tigran was awarded Doctor of Music degree from Michigan State University in Lansing /
Michigan in 2009, thus making him the first Uzbek musician to earn a doctorate degree
in music performance from an American institution. He studied conducting with Robert
Cameron at Duquesne University and Leon Gregorian at Michigan State University. His
violin and chamber music teachers included Nataliy Pogorelova, Nathan Mendelssohn,
Vladimir Ioudenitch, Bakhram Kurbanov, Charles Stegeman, Randolph Kelly, Misha
Quint, Emanuel Borok, and Dmitri Berlinsky.
Over the course of his studies, Dr. Tigran Shiganyan has been a recipient of numerous
awards, including a grant from the Open Society Institute & Foundation in Uzbekistan /
USA, and full scholarships from Duquesne University and Michigan State University. Dr.
Shiganyan was also recognized as an outstanding scholar by the United States
Achievement Academy’s All-American Scholar, and Who’s Who Among Students in
American Universities & Colleges.
Dr. Tigran Shiganyan has appeared as a soloist and conductor in France, Germany,
Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and throughout the United States with such
orchestras as Uzbekistan National Symphony Orchestra, Duquesne Wind Symphony,
Tashkent Opera Symphony Orchestra, Michigan State University Philharmonic
Orchestra, and Missouri Symphony Orchestra. His chamber orchestra collaborations
included Chamber Orchestra “Turkistan”, Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Berlin,
The Soloists of Uzbekistan, The Academy of Soloists, Duquesne Contemporary
Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra “Camerata of Michigan”, Rose Chamber Orchestra and the
International Chamber Soloists. He has been invited to perform at prestigious festivals,
such as International Festival of Contemporary Music “Moscow Autumn” in Russia,
International Festival of Contemporary Music “Ilkhom-XX” in Uzbekistan, and “Hot
Summer Night” Music Festival in Columbia / Missouri, and Utah Festival Opera in Logan
/ Utah, to name a few. Recent highlights included conducting engagements at the First
International Orchestra Music Festival "Golden Autumn” and International Arts Music
Festival “Bahor Nafasi” in Tashkent / Uzbekistan.
Dr. Shiganyan is a passionate proponent of modern music. He conducted and performed
as a violinist and chamber musician numerous worlds and national premieres of works
by his mother, celebrated Uzbek composer Dilorom Saidaminova. He also gave multiple
Central Asian and Uzbek premiers of music by great American composers, such as
Leonard Bernstein, John Adams, and John Williams, among many others. A strong
believer in the international peace and enrichment through exchange, Dr. Shiganyan
invited some of the top American musicians and educators to visit Uzbekistan with
concerts, master- classes, and lectures, thus establishing “Cultural Bridges” between the
two countries.
In 2014, Dr. Shiganyan founded the ArtNova Project, dedicated to discovery and
performance of music for various types of chamber ensembles. Based in Michigan, they
have been regularly performing in popular concert series, such as Lansing Symphony
Orchestra Chamber Series in Lansing, Friends of Absolute Music in East Lansing, and
Flint Institute of Music Concerts Series in Flint. He also gave performances at the
Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference in Hershey / Pennsylvania, and
the 30th Annual Western Pennsylvania Symposium on World Literatures in Pittsburg /
Pennsylvania.
His first solo CD, dedicated to Alfred Schnittke’s violin music, and his second solo CD &
DVD project, Chamber Music of Dilorom Saidaminova, were released on the Blue Griffin
Recording label, and were subsequently awarded two major prizes –The Akademia
Music Awards in Los Angeles / California for the “Best World Beat” Music Video and
Silver Medal from the Global Music Awards in La Jolla / California in three different
categories - World Music, Album, and Chamber Music.
Dr. Shiganyan has performed professionally with Pittsburgh Opera Theater, the
Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and Kalamazoo Symphony
Orchestra. Also on numerous Broadway productions with several established
companies, such as New York Broadway & DreamWorks Theatricals, New York
Broadway & The Really Useful Group, and M2M Entertainment Productions. In addition,
he performed with Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra shows. Over
the course of his career, he shared stage with such artists as the acclaimed Emmy and
Tony Award-winning star Kristin Chenoweth, ten-time Grammy Award winner American
jazz vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin, and three-time Oscar and five-time
Grammy Award winner legendary composer Michel Legrand.
Dr. Shiganyan is in high demand as an adjudicator, and was recently invited to judge the
1st International Music Competition “Iste’dod ” and the National Youth String Music
Competition in Uzbekistan. He has been serving as Chair of the State Examination
Committee at Uzbekistan State Conservatory since 2015. In December of 2016, Dr.
Shiganyan was awarded Honorary Professorship by the Uzbekistan State Conservatory
in Tashkent / Uzbekistan, becoming the youngest professor in the history of this
venerable institution. In the United States, he serves on the faculty of Flint Institute of
Music in Flint / Michigan.
He made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall of Pittsburgh with Duquesne Wind
Symphony in 2003, and at Carnegie Hall / Weill Recital Hall in New York with Gloria
Youth Orchestra from Philadelphia in 2018.
In 2017, Dr. Tigran Shiganyan was invited to join Global Music Partnership / USA, as
Honorary Artist and Advisor, representing Center Asia & Midwest region of the United
States, and Artistic Director of the Global Music Partnership International Concerto
Competition. The Competition is consistently attracting top musical talent from Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Poland, Russia, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Japan and
Uzbekistan, thus fulfilling Dr. Shiganyan dream of creating a more peaceful and
understanding world united by music.
